The Youth Workshop Productions are open to ages 5 – 16 and offer an opportunity for young performers to be involved in all aspects of theatre. There is a production fee of $65 for each cast member. Please contact Lindsey at 603.433.4793 ext. 125 for information.
Audition Information and Requirements
Those auditioning for a Youth Workshop Production should come prepared with a short monologue or poem memorized, and a song to sing. Sheet music is optional. Bring along a recent photo of yourself and a resume if you have one.
Auditioners should plan to stay at the theatre from 4:00pm to approximately 6:00pm (depending on the # of auditioners). Parents are welcome to wait in the lobby or run errands and return at 5:45pm.
Rehearsal Schedule
Rehearsals are held either at the theatre or at SRT2 (the Grange) located in Kittery, Maine, just 5 minutes over the Memorial Bridge. Rehearsals are typically held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm – 6:00/6:30pm for a total of 4 – 5 weeks. Not all cast members will be called to every rehearsal. A tentative rehearsal schedule is distributed at the audition.
Performances
Performances times TBA. All actors are called to the theatre 1 hour prior to the performance to get into costume and make-up. Attendance at all performances is mandatory unless otherwise arranged between the parent and the director well ahead of time. Performances include weekend performances as well as two days of school matinees.
School Matinees
There are two weekday performances for each Youth Workshop Production. You are encouraged to invite your classmates to come see the show! The audience will be filled with students, teachers and chaperones and after each show we will have a Question and Answer period with the audience. Yes, you will miss school. Check in with your teachers and hand in your homework ahead of time!
Conflicts
It is extremely important that we are aware of any and all conflicts prior to the start of rehearsal. Bring your schedules to the audition! If you have conflicts with the rehearsal/performance schedule, it does not mean you will not be cast. However, we do need to make arrangements to have your part covered as necessary.
Casting
Casting will be complete by the Monday following the audition. All cast members will receive a phone call at home to confirm. Those that are not cast in the show will receive an email. More details are distributed and discussed at the audition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to schedule an audition appointment?
No, this type of audition is known in the theatre world as a “cattle-call” audition. This means that you show up prepared (see above for requirements), fill out the paperwork, and audition as one big group. Auditions will last between 1hr. and 45 minutes and 2hrs.
What if I don’t have a recent photo of myself?
Unless the director of the show knows you, we HIGHLY recommend you bring a photo of yourself. Print one from your computer, make a copy or bring in a school photo. Photos are extremely helpful, especially when we get upwards of 50 young people auditioning at the same time. Photos will not be returned.
Where do I find a monologue or poem?
Barnes and Noble has a small selection of monologue books. You can also find monologue books at the library or buy them online. For the younger performers, Shel Silverstein poems work great! You could even recite a poem or part of a short story. Pick something age appropriate.
What type of song should I sing?
For the older/more experienced auditioners, sing something from a musical, something that you like, and something that you feel shows off your best abilities. For the younger/less experienced auditioners, sing something from a musical, a song from school, chorus or church or a special song you sing at home.
What if I don’t have sheet music?
That’s ok. In most cases we will not have an accompanist for auditions. Plan to sing a capella. Memorize your song, sing confidently and you will be just fine!
Any helpful audition tips?
Speak slowly, loudly and clearly. The folks sitting all the way in the back row want to hear you just as well as the folks sitting in the front row. Use your STAGE VOICE! Come prepared! Memorize your song and poem/monologue. Practice at home or in front of friends and family. Pick a song and a monologue/poem that you like and that you perform well. Smile.
