August 31, 2020Review: ’The Bus Stop’ is ’a moving and intriguing piece for the times’
“The Bus Stop,” a play by Najee A. Brown, is debuting on stage (and live-streaming) at Seacoast Repertory Theatre. Brown, a newcomer to the Seacoast, drew from family experiences. The result is a moving and intriguing piece for the times.
Five African American women take centerstage. The diverse quintet meets at a bus stop while waiting for a ride to visit a man in their life who has been incarcerated.
They range in age from late-teens and early twenties to senior citizens. Their relationships have the feel of easy at times, but just as often are complicated, difficult and demanding. The men in their lives include an estranged dad, a boyfriend, husband and sons; here the relationships are always complex.
To explain the stories and evolution requires spoilers; and this tale deserves to unfold. What can be safety said is these women share the trivial, crucial and heartfelt. They fight among themselves – generational and perspective battles, and some due to plain ugliness. There’s spitefulness and generosity, hope, hurt and change.
