Theater & Dance Classes

For aspiring performers looking to get valuable instruction in stagecraft, the Portsmouth Academy of Performing Arts offers year-round instruction for all ages and skill levels.

We offer several sessions for ages 4-12, as well as workshops and intensives for ages 10-17, and classes for adults.

Some classes repeat throughout the year, so if you can’t make a certain session you will be able to sign up for the next one!  Check back throughout the year for exciting updates.  Returning students are always encouraged to register, as no two sessions are ever the same!

Nailing the Audition!

Instructor: Amanda D’Amico

Ages 12 to 18

February 18th (Ages 13-15)
February 19th (Ages 16-18)

6:00pm to 9:00pm

In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn proper audition etiquette and will be guided to a successful presentation!

Students will be:

  • Coached on entering the audition room and introducing themselves (how to slate).
  • Guided in how to best present themselves when answering questions from the production team.
  • Coached on chosen audition material through a mock audition.
  • Given personalized suggestions on choosing future material.

February 18th (Ages 13-15)
February 19th (Ages 16-18)

Hip Hop Tap with Alyssa & Jason

Instructor: Alyssa Dumas & Jason Faria

Ages 12 and up (tap experience required)

February 24th (NH February Vacation)

1:00pm to 2:30pm

In this 90 minute workshop, students will get the unique experience of learning a combination of a Hip Hop and Tap number choreographed for an actual Drag show by Alyssa Dumas & Jason Faria. Students will need intermediate tap skills to participate in this workshop.

Master the Dance Call

Instructor: Andrea Lyons

Ages 12 and up

February 25th (NH February Vacation)

11:00am to 12:30pm

In this 90 minute workshop students will learn basic strength and conditioning skills for Musical Theater Dance. They will then learn dance techniques specifically designed to help them with future Dance Call Auditions. This workshop is designed for Beginner and Intermediate Dancers.

Move to the Music

Instructor: Katie Juster

Ages 3 to 6

3 Weeks: February 29th – March 14th or March 21st – April 4th

9:00am to 9:45am

If you have a child who loves moving to the beat, and exploring all kinds of music they will love this explorative music class! In Move to the Music! students will gain auditory and tactile knowledge of different rhythms in music. Students will be able to find and move accurately to a rhythm within any given song. Over this three week course, students will explore different instruments and styles of dance, culminating in a short “showcase” performance after our final class.

Cost: $95.00 (for three weeks)

Take the Stage

Instructor: Katie Juster

Ages 7 to 11

Once a Week for Six Weeks

10:30am to 11:30am

If you know a child who has caught the acting bug, Take the Stage! will take them to the next level. In Take the Stage!, students will gain a knowledge of theatre basics and will learn how to use their imagination to create and tell a story on stage. Students will learn how to create a voice and a physicality for characters through acting exercises and practices. Using the skills they’ve gained over the six week course, students will work along with the instructor to create and perform their own skit, which will be performed at the final showcase after the last class.

Acting Through Comedy

Instructor: Kevin Mahaney

Ages 9 to 13

March 9th, 16th, 23rd

Time to get goofy! Acting through comedy is a workshop that will teach children how to be funny on stage without forcing it. This 3 week class will be looking at comedic monologues and scenes in order to help to develop comedic timing on stage, yet not break character.

Healthy Belting & Acting

Instructor: Alyssa Dumas

Ages 12 to 18

March 9th

4:00pm to 5:30pm

In this 90 minute vocal workshop students will learn to sing and belt without hurting their voices. They will also learn acting through song, the art of telling a story while performing a song. Students should come prepared with a song they would like to work on. Workshop is limited to 6 students.

Dancing in Heels

Instructor: Alyssa Dumas & Jason Faria

Ages 12 and up

April 20th

4:00pm to 5:30pm

Learn to strut your stuff and dance in heels with Alyssa & Jason. This is an important and rarely taught skill to learn when performing. This is also a perfect start to developing your Drag Queen and can be paired with our “Find & Develop your Drag Queen” workshop on April 21st. Students should bring heels that are no higher than 3”. If students would like to borrow heels, please email Kristen.dalton@seacoastrep.org by April 18th with your shoe size and we are happy to loan you a pair.

Find & Develop Your Drag Queen

Instructor: Alyssa Dumas & Jason Faria

Ages 12 and up

April 21st

4:00pm to 5:30pm

Take your first step to letting your Drag Queen come out. Students are encouraged to also take part in our “Dancing in Heels” workshop on April 20th. In this 90 minute workshop Alyssa & Jason will guide you on your journey of developing and becoming your Drag Queen. Students will learn to paint their faces and find their inner Queen. Students are asked to bring their own stage make-up. Wigs will be provided.
